SPECIAL EVENING with the preview screening of the documentary ""In the footsteps of Henry de Monfreid, writer and pirate of the Red Sea""

A film by Valérie MANNS, produced by Nilaya Productions and soon to be released on France 5.

The documentary broadcast on the occasion of the launch of this exhibition is an exclusive! It is based, among other things, on documents taken from the Henry de Monfreid archive fund of the Aude Departmental Archives.

    Synopsis:

In 1911, Henry de Monfreid left France for Abyssinia. He converted to Islam to penetrate the heart of the forbidden regions of Yemen and Ethiopia. A pearl fisherman, arms and hashish dealer, and an insatiable navigator, he braved the Red Sea and its storms. It is an understatement to say that Henry de Monfreid was an extraordinary man. A navigator, smuggler, photographer, illustrator and writer of the eye, in love with freedom, he never stopped writing his own legend. This film is a portrait of this ambivalent character who will have fascinated generations of readers and frightened others with his profound singularity, his extremism and his ambiguity. A writer from elsewhere, in a bygone era when the world was infinite and full of resources. A world where all you had to do was arm yourself with courage andWithout doubt also of unconsciousness to embark on the seas without knowing what his route would look like, Monfreid's fable can also be understood as that of a sick West coming to regenerate itself through contact with Africa and its mysticism.
